  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Paychex Inc C, indicating average quality relative to its S&P 500 industry peers, where solid growth stands against weakness in its price trend.
  • The day: The shares tumbled 8.8% to $104.49 after fiscal first-quarter growth in its core management solutions division trailed annual targets.
  • Watching: A losing run of seven consecutive sessions has pushed the stock within 25.1% of its 52-week low of $83.50.

On Wednesday, Paychex delivered fiscal first-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.34 per share on revenue of $1.63 billion, beating profit expectations while meeting revenue consensus. The market reaction turned sharply negative because revenue in Management Solutions, the company's core payroll segment, rose 4% to $1.2 billion, trailing the company's full-year projection of 5% to 6% for that unit.

Although revenue from professional employer organization and insurance services climbed 12%, management kept full-year guidance unchanged for total revenue growth of 5% to 6% and adjusted earnings growth of 7% to 9%. Sentiment was further pressured by weaker free cash flow relative to reported net income, triggering the largest single-day decline in the stock over the past year on trading volume that reached 3.0x the 20-session average.

EasyAlpha carried a C grade on the company into Wednesday's session, indicating average quality compared to industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E, while a C grade reflects a typical industry profile. Paychex generates healthy profitability, supported by a 27.0% profit margin and a 44.8% return on equity. Even so, the core business showed signs of deceleration that tested the stock's valuation.

The sharp decline extends recent momentum weakness, leaving the shares at -17.1% over the past month. Paychex trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 23.5. Wall Street analysts remain cautious on the stock: only 11.1% of the 18 analysts covering the company maintain buy ratings, though their average price target of $121.00 sits 15.8% above Wednesday's close.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
