The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (ticker XLI), an exchange-traded fund that tracks industrial companies, closed +0.6% on Tuesday, October 27. Breadth across the sector was positive, with 57.0% of its stocks advancing as the cap-weighted Industrials sector finished +0.6%. Yet only 27.2% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, and the quiet overall session hid wide dispersion among its individual holdings. Individual water technology names diverged sharply: Pentair PLC finished +12.8% after delivering higher quarterly sales and profits, while Xylem Inc closed -14.3% after cutting its annual revenue and profit forecasts.

The contrasting reports showed how split industrial demand remains across specialized equipment markets. Pentair beat third-quarter revenue and profit estimates and reaffirmed its full-year outlook. By contrast, Xylem lowered its full-year revenue and adjusted earnings guidance, pointing to project timing and more cautious customer spending. The divergence between the companies produced some of the widest single-day moves across the broader industrial landscape on Tuesday.

Power and automation equipment providers also saw significant activity. Bloom Energy Corp settled +7.1% as analysts pointed to rising demand for on-site power generation from data centers expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. Meanwhile, Rockwell Automation unveiled its innovation lineup at its annual Automation Fair event.

Across the broader market, 7 of the 11 sectors rose on Tuesday, October 27. Within the sector, weighting every company equally yielded a move of +0.5%, trailing the cap-weighted result. Because the cap-weighted sector move ran ahead of the equal-weighted measure, the largest names did more of the work during Tuesday's advance.

Over longer horizons, the sector has faced headwinds. While the fund has generated +7.8% over the past twelve months, it has drifted lower over intermediate periods, recording -3.6% across the last 100 sessions.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
