- Our read: Pentair carries an A quality grade, scoring among the strongest Industrials peers in the S&P 500; valuation is where the company looks strongest, while growth remains the primary vulnerability.
- The day: Shares jumped 12.8% to close at $62.30 after the company topped third-quarter earnings estimates and raised its full-year sales guidance.
- Watching: Progress in growth, where quarterly revenue growth stood at -17.0% year over year.
Pentair shares jumped on Tuesday, finishing at $62.30 as trading volume climbed to 2.9x its 20-session average. The rally was Pentair's largest one-day advance since Wednesday, July 15. The move came as the water treatment equipment company reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.18 per share, topping the $1.08 analyst estimate, while revenue reached $976 million, ahead of consensus expectations.
Beyond the headline figures, the advance was supported by expectations that inventory destocking across the pool business is nearing an end. While core sales in the pool division fell roughly 18% year over year, management signaled that customer destocking is now largely complete. At the same time, the company lifted its full-year sales outlook. Growth expectations also drew support as the company completed its acquisition of Taco Group Holdings on October 1, an addition projected to expand commercial HVAC and data center offerings while driving sales and earnings in 2027.
Pentair carried an A quality grade relative to its industry peers into Tuesday's trading. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. valuation is where the company looks strongest. The shares trade at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 14.2, supported by a return on equity of 17.1%.
The challenge lies in whether business fundamentals can support sustained momentum. Sluggish growth remains the key vulnerability, with quarterly revenue growth running at -17.0% year over year. Even with Tuesday's surge, Pentair stands at -40.2% so far this year. Wall Street sentiment also reflects that caution: 50.0% of covering analysts rate the shares a buy, and the consensus price target of $70.80 sits 13.6% above Tuesday's close.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
