  • Our read: Pershing Square Inc. carries an E grade against its industry peers among the top 1,000 U.S. companies, placing it in the weakest tier as elevated valuation risk counters its growth.
  • The day: Shares fell 12.1% to close at $47.65 on Tuesday, October 13 after BofA Securities downgraded the company to Underperform and slashed its price target.
  • Watching: The asset manager is scheduled to report its next earnings on Wednesday, November 11.

Tuesday's tumble marked the stock's sixth-largest single-day decline over the past year. The drop accelerated after BofA Securities downgraded the stock to Underperform and reduced its price target to $38. That move compounded selling pressure from days earlier, when Citigroup lowered its recommendation on the stock to Sell.

Wall Street research pointed to lagging portfolio performance and delayed fund growth initiatives as key drivers behind the wave of broker skepticism. Analysts highlighted that the flagship fund's net asset value has lagged behind the broader market this year even as major equity indexes reached higher ground. Furthermore, research notes lowered earnings estimates and cited launch delays for the PSV fund when reducing long-term price objectives.

EasyAlpha's numbers show why the market responded so sharply to those warnings. Pershing Square carried an E grade into Tuesday's session, ranking in the weakest tier against its industry peers in Financial Services. In EasyAlpha's historical research across thousands of companies, businesses graded A or B have delivered stronger fundamentals and carried lower historical risks of severe drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The valuation strain is evident across the firm's financial profile. Shares trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 51.5, an unusually high multiple for an asset manager whose recent operational results remain modest. Profitability metrics remain limited, with return on equity at 2.5% and profit margin at 2.1%. While growth scores as the strongest single dimension in its file, underlying earnings generation has not matched the premium placed on the stock.

The sharp drop also took place against an already skeptical Wall Street backdrop. Among ten analysts covering the stock, only 10.0% maintain buy ratings. Even after Tuesday's drop, the shares closed 3.5% above the average analyst price target of $46.00, though the stock remains +19.2% over the past month.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
