  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades PG&E Corp D, scoring it below average against its Utilities peers, as the stock is graded D by EasyAlpha while 82.4% of 17 analyst ratings are buys, with valuation as its top scored area against a weak price trend.
  • The day: Shares jumped +5.9% to close at $14.05 on Tuesday, September 1 after California lawmakers shelved a contentious wildfire liability bill.
  • Watching: The company's next quarterly earnings report on Thursday, October 22.

A sharp +5.9% rally on Tuesday, September 1 gave the utility its third-largest daily gain of the past year on trading volume reaching 4.1x the recent average. The jump followed a punishing session a day earlier, when shares tumbled after California lawmakers stripped key liability protections from proposed wildfire legislation. Tuesday brought immediate relief after lawmakers adjourned without taking a vote on the amended legislation, choosing instead to postpone negotiations on the wildfire measure until the fall.

The decision to shelve the bill paused the immediate legislative threat, but it leaves the utility's long-term liability unresolved. The draft bill had excluded measures to shield the sector from wildfire-related lawsuits. That exclusion prompted analysts to warn that the company faces "open-ended wildfire-related tail risk", leading several brokerages to downgrade the stock and lower price targets as financing questions lingered.

EasyAlpha carried a D grade on PG&E Corp into the session, scoring the company below average against its Utilities peers with more warning signs than most in its group. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Wall Street analysts take a far more optimistic view, with 82.4% of 17 covering analysts maintaining buy ratings and establishing an average price target of $22.72.

Even with Tuesday's bounce, the stock remains down -23.4% over the past week, sitting just 7.4% above its 52-week low. The steep decline has compressed multiples, leaving shares trading at 13.0 times trailing earnings. Modest multiples keep valuation as the stock's highest scored factor, while price trend remains the primary vulnerability as legal exposure and California's unresolved wildfire liability framework continue to dominate sentiment.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
