On Wednesday, October 21, the exchange-traded fund Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU) closed +0.3% while the cap-weighted Utilities sector finished +0.4%. Inside the group, 58.1% of stocks advanced, but the day's strength was concentrated in independent power producers rather than traditional regulated utilities. Constellation Energy Corp led the sector at +4.6% and Vistra Corp. followed at +3.9%, while regulated peer Dominion Energy Inc finished -0.8%. At the same time, high-quality companies make up a small share of the portfolio: only 24.7% of the fund's graded weight sits in stocks graded A or B. The power producers drove the day after analysts raised price targets on Constellation Energy to $378 from $369.

Vistra advanced alongside Constellation as technology executives highlighted electrical power and infrastructure as the primary bottleneck facing artificial intelligence expansion. Power generators have also seen backing from federal energy initiatives, including a conditional $4.2 billion loan commitment to support nuclear generation uprates across Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Traditional regulated utilities saw far less enthusiasm. Dominion Energy slipped to the bottom of the sector, where state officials have opposed its proposed merger with NextEra Energy absent stronger customer rate protections. Broader equity markets also moved higher as major indexes climbed on corporate earnings, on a day when 7 of the 11 sectors rose.

That split between merchant generators and regulated utilities left the broader sector little changed overall. The equal-weighted sector move of +0.4% matched the cap-weighted result of +0.4%, showing that performance was balanced across company sizes. At Wednesday's close, the fund finished at $42.02, continuing a period of stabilization after a difficult twelve-month stretch where the fund stands at -53.6%.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
