  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Quest Diagnostics Incorporated D among healthcare peers in the S&P 500, where solid earnings quality is offset by weak volume behavior as 52.9% of analyst ratings sit at buy.
  • The day: The shares fell 4.1% to close at $234.76 on Tuesday, September 22 following proposed federal Medicare payment cuts for laboratory testing.
  • Watching: Third-quarter financial results scheduled for Tuesday, October 20.

The drop on Tuesday, September 22 was the fifth-largest daily decline for DGX over the past year, with trading volume swelling to 2.8x its 20-session average. The pressure followed a regulatory update from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which proposed preliminary laboratory fee reductions averaging 16 percent starting January 1, 2027. Diagnostic laboratory shares fell across the sector as investors evaluated rate reductions capped at 15 percent annually.

The policy headwind arrived shortly after the stock reached its 52-week high of $248.84, leaving the shares 5.7% below that peak. The session marked a sharp turn for the stock following a steady run higher.

After moving -5.0% over the past week, the stock is +35.3% so far this year. EasyAlpha grades the company D against its industry peers. In historical studies across the market, companies graded D or E have demonstrated weaker fundamentals and a greater risk of significant drawdowns than those graded A or B. The company maintains a return on equity of 14.6%.

Valuation reflects heightened expectations, with the shares trading at 20.5 times forward earnings following latest quarterly revenue growth of +10.2% year over year. Wall Street remains largely positive, holding an average price target of $247.40 that sits 5.4% above the current price. Although sector peer Labcorp reaffirmed its long-term financial guidance after the rate announcement, the proposed reductions introduce lasting policy friction into the sector.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
