EasyAlpha's data shows that the Real Estate sector faced near-total selling on Monday, October 19, with just 3.6% of its S&P 500 members advancing and only 24.6% of the graded weight in the exchange-traded fund Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE) belonging to companies graded A or B. The weakness was widespread across property segments: Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc closed -2.4%, while the session's top gainer, Host Hotels & Resorts Inc, finished at +0.9% and second-place Welltower Inc ended -0.5%. That retreat unfolded as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.15%. Meanwhile, housing sentiment weakened as the NAHB housing index fell to 29 against expectations of 31.

Pressure From Higher Yields

Across the broader market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose, and Real Estate was among the weakest performers. The sector's cap-weighted move was -1.1%, while its equal-weighted return was -1.2%, indicating that the largest names held up better and did more of the work. Fixed-income markets saw widespread selling, driven in part by worries that political unrest in Europe could prompt greater government spending. Domestic benchmark rates moved higher in response, with the 30-year Treasury yield reaching 5.48%.

Fund Profile and Performance

The session closed with the fund at $41.67, marking -1.2% on the day. That move extends a sustained drawdown: the fund stands at -2.0% over the past month and -6.2% over the last 100 sessions. That persistence underlines how sustained yield pressure has curtailed capital flows across the sector, leaving the fund to absorb prolonged valuation headwinds rather than brief trading swings.

Quality Distribution

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Within the sector, 24.6% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Historically, companies in the A and B tiers have stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That historical pattern is relative and offers no guarantee for any individual company, but it highlights that roughly three-quarters of the fund sits outside the top two grades.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
