The Real Estate sector showed broad participation on Thursday, October 22, with 77.8% of its member companies advancing. The equal-weighted sector finished +1.9%, running well ahead of the cap-weighted sector, which settled +0.8%, because smaller operators outpaced the group's largest components. That widespread buying lifted the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under the ticker XLRE, which closed +1.1% at $42.53. The move came as falling Treasury yields helped defensive and rate-sensitive sectors. At the same time, sharp drops for technology stocks pressured broader markets.
The difference between equal and cap-weighted performance showed that smaller names did more of the work during the session. The sector's weakest performer on the day was Equinix Inc, which closed -4.3%. Our sources show no reported company catalyst for the decline.
At the top of the group, CoStar Group Inc led individual gainers, finishing +7.8%. Our sources show no reported news or corporate catalyst explaining the move, though the company had previously scheduled its quarterly earnings announcement for October 27. Across the broader market, 5 of the 11 sectors rose.
The fund reflects an uneven underlying portfolio: only 34.3% of its graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Companies in those top tiers have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Most of the fund's weight sits in companies with typical or below-average peer marks. While falling bond yields supported the group on the day, the fund has moved -2.2% over the past 100 sessions and -3.0% over the past six months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
