The Real Estate sector saw broad buying on Tuesday, October 20, with 96.3% of its constituents advancing even though just 31.5% of the group holds an A or B quality grade. Mid-sized and smaller property firms set the pace, as an equal-weighted measure of the sector finished +1.8% compared to the cap-weighted +1.7% mark. That participation helped the exchange-traded fund tracking the group, the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE), finish +1.7%. The session advanced as investors rotated out of technology shares and into value-oriented segments. During the session, the 10-year Treasury yield slipped 1.5 basis points to 5.121%. Broader market sentiment gained an additional lift as crude oil prices cooled.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc led the sector, finishing +5.0%, while CoStar Group Inc ended +3.9%. Across the sector, only a tiny sliver of companies lost ground, with SBA Communications Corp recording the weakest performance after closing -1.2%. The move matched a broadly positive day across equity markets where 9 of the 11 sectors rose.
The single-session advance contrasts with the sector's longer-term performance. Over the past hundred sessions, XLRE stands at -3.7%, and its return over the past twelve months is -0.2%. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.
Across the fund, that modest quality profile leaves most holdings in average and lower tiers. While XLRE offers low-cost access to the sector at an expense ratio of 0.08%, the fund's $7.7 billion footprint means investor capital is predominantly held in companies with higher historical drawdown risk. Yet Tuesday's rebound reflected a broader market rotation rather than a structural shift in real estate fundamentals.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
