On Tuesday, September 1, breadth was split across the Real Estate sector as 43.3% of its stocks advanced, allowing cap-weighted losses of -0.1% to slightly outpace the -0.2% decline on an equal-weighted basis. The exchange-traded fund tracking the group, the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE), dipped -0.1% as gains in Welltower Inc (+1.8%) and Regency Centers Corporation (+1.7%) counterbalanced weakness in Equinix Inc (-1.8%). That subdued session unfolded as rising crude oil prices stoked fresh inflation concerns across markets. The jump in energy costs helped push the 10-year Treasury yield toward 4.79%. Bond markets also reflected elevated expectations for another central bank interest rate hike.
The climb in yields contributed to a cautious tone across the broader equity market, where only 4 of the 11 sectors rose. That pressure spread across the board as rising bond yields weighed heavily on rate-sensitive equities. Residential housing shares experienced sharper declines, with the Philadelphia Housing Index dropping 2% during the session. In contrast, the sector's large healthcare and retail operators absorbed the move with modest gains, cushioning the broader fund.
For investors tracking the sector through XLRE, the fund closed at $44.05, bringing its performance over the past month to -2.5%. The gap between the cap-weighted decline of -0.1% and the equal-weighted decline of -0.2% indicates that the sector's largest constituents provided more relative support than its smaller members. Even with only 43.3% of the sector's stocks advancing on the day, strength in top holdings helped keep the fund's overall loss minimal.
Within the fund, 41.5% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That quality concentration provided stability on a day when macroeconomic crosscurrents weighed on equity markets broadly.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
