The Energy sector showed broad participation on Friday, October 30, even as its fundamental quality remained concentrated. Across the exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), 85.7% of member companies advanced as the fund closed +1.9%. Yet only 23.5% of the fund's graded portfolio carries an A or B quality grade against industry peers. Larger producers did the heaviest lifting: the cap-weighted sector closed +1.9%, outpacing an equal-weighted measure that ended +1.6%. That strength followed third-quarter earnings reports from major producers, as ExxonMobil beat analyst profit expectations and Chevron posted strong refinery throughput, while crude oil prices rose sharply following conflict-driven shipping delays in the Strait of Hormuz.

Independent refiners led the sector's leaderboard. Valero Energy Corporation finished +3.9%, while Phillips 66 closed +3.4%. The strength in refining came as downstream operating conditions proved resilient: Chevron reported 98% utilization across its domestic refineries. By contrast, pipeline and midstream operator Williams Companies Inc sat at -0.7%, with our sources showing no reported driver for the move.

Physical commodity markets provided a tailwind throughout the session. Brent crude advanced 2.4% as disruptions tied to the conflict involving Iran constrained oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The energy rally provided rare shelter in an otherwise difficult equity session: 5 of the 11 sectors rose as a deepening sell-off in technology shares pulled major indexes lower. Strong quarterly cash flow reinforced that defensive appeal, with ExxonMobil generating $15.4 billion in net income and Chevron producing $9.9 billion in profit.

For investors tracking the group through XLE, the vehicle closed at $70.02. Friday's advance added to a recent recovery for the fund, yet it also highlights the recurring tension inside the sector. Commodity price spikes and quarterly earnings beats can deliver swift gains, but they do not automatically transform underlying business quality across the industry.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
