Breadth weakened on Thursday, September 10, with only 30% of the top 1000 companies closing higher and 2 of the 11 sectors rose. Trading volume was moderately active at 117% of a typical day's volume, while the broad market finished -2.6% from its all-time high. It was a day where selling spread across most industries, but the pullback did not disrupt the wider multi-month trend.

The selling followed fresh macro pressures. Disruptions to global crude supplies sent oil prices sharply higher, stoking worries about persistent inflation. At the same time, wholesale inflation accelerated to 5.4% year over year, while lower weekly jobless claims fueled expectations of an interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields rose toward 4.95%, reducing the appeal of equity valuations.

The headline indexes moved lower in response. The S&P 500 finished -0.6%, while the SPY fund closed at $757.94. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 closed -1.1%, the Dow ended -0.6%, and small caps in the Russell 2000 settled -1.0%. Sector performance was broadly negative. Materials lagged the market, closing -1.4%, while Communication Services stood as the top group with a move of +0.2%.

Technology and semiconductor names accounted for much of the index pressure. NVIDIA Corporation (-2.4%) and Micron Technology Inc (-4.9%) both retreated, while analysts initiated coverage on Intel with a neutral rating on valuation concerns. Bucking the downward trend, Apple Inc. (+3.6%) posted solid gains, providing a partial cushion against steeper losses in large-cap benchmarks.

Under the surface, financial conditions remained orderly despite the daily losses. High-yield credit spreads held at 2.71%, changing 0.00 points over recent weeks to signal steady borrower health. The VIX finished at 16.5, indicating measured expectations for near-term volatility, and the yield curve sat at +0.40 points.
