Broader equity markets rebounded on Friday, August 21, but the Real Estate sector struggled to join the advance. S&P Global reported that the August composite PMI rose to 56.0, signaling the fastest growth in business activity since April 2022. Reuters reported that major indexes advanced after a volatile week, but the Associated Press reported that rising Treasury yields applied pressure across markets, alongside oil-related inflation concerns and geopolitical uncertainty.

Constituent pressure added to the drag. TipRanks reported that data center operator Digital Realty Trust fell amid cooling sentiment for artificial intelligence infrastructure stocks, higher yields, and a registered share resale. That move made Digital Realty Trust Inc (-1.9%) the sector's weakest performer. Modest advances in SBA Communications Corp (+1.1%) and Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc (+1.0%) provided minor support, but they could not offset the weakness among larger holdings.

That divergence shaped the day's performance and breadth. The cap-weighted Real Estate sector slipped -0.2%, while the equal-weighted measure declined -0.1%. The larger drop in the cap-weighted series shows that the sector's biggest companies exerted the most downward pull. Market breadth was negative, with only 12 of 29 advancing on the session.

That split between declining large holdings and resilient smaller names kept the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE), an exchange-traded fund, flat at +0.0% to close at $45.08, leaving its gain over the past month at +0.3%.

EasyAlpha grades 95.1% of the fund's weight against industry peers. Within that graded roster, 35.7% sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. That relative assessment reflects historical findings across industry tiers rather than a forecast for any single stock.
