  • Our read: Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd is graded D by EasyAlpha while 67.9% of 28 analyst ratings are buys, where strong profitability is offset by lagging efficiency against industry peers in the S&P 500.
  • The day: The shares rose 7.5% to close at $260.73 on Tuesday, September 29 after peer Carnival reported strong quarterly earnings and raised its outlook.
  • Watching: The next quarterly earnings report scheduled for Tuesday, October 27.

A positive earnings report from rival Carnival ignited the day's sharp move across the cruise industry. Carnival posted adjusted earnings of $1.43 per share for its fiscal third quarter, topping analyst forecasts and raising its full-year profit outlook. Management reported record customer deposits of $7.6 billion and accelerating booking demand, easing concerns over consumer leisure spending and sparking a broad rally across the sector that lifted RCL alongside its peers.

The surge followed additional supportive developments earlier in the week. Analysts issued an upgrade from Neutral to Buy with a $330 price target. Investors have also responded to Royal Caribbean's announcement that it agreed to acquire a 50 percent stake in Sandals and Beaches Resorts for approximately $3 billion, extending its reach into land-based all-inclusive vacations.

The stock surged 7.5% on Tuesday, marking its fourth-largest single-day gain over the past year and its largest advance since Wednesday, May 6. However, RCL carried an EasyAlpha grade of D into the session against its industry peers in the S&P 500. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

In the company's scored profile, profitability is the strongest dimension: Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd delivers a profit margin of 23.5% and a return on equity of 44.7%. By contrast, efficiency is the weakest scored dimension and the primary watch item against industry peers.

That assessment contrasts with the broader sentiment on Wall Street. Among 28 analysts covering RCL, 67.9% rate the stock a buy, with an average price target of $348.28 that implies a 33.6% premium over Tuesday's close. Yet despite the session's strong jump, RCL is -6.7% over the past month and -6.5% so far this year, sitting 25.6% below its 52-week high of $350.59.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
