The session at a glance

As trading begins for Friday, October 2, the broader market sits -1.8% from its recent peak. In the previous session on Thursday, October 1, SPY closed at $763.99 with the S&P 500 +0.2%. Benchmark performance across major asset classes reflected steady conditions across equities. Technology shares showed modest strength as the Nasdaq 100 finished +0.3%, while the Russell 2000 small caps registered +0.4% and the Dow ended 0.0%. Market participation remained solid across the broader equity market, where 60.4% of the top 1,000 U.S. companies finished the day higher, indicating that advances were distributed across a majority of individual components rather than concentrated in a few mega-cap names.

While New York was shut, EasyAlpha completed its newest scoring run and updated its assessments across the S&P 500. These rating changes reflect shifts in our own ongoing evaluation of company fundamentals and market signals relative to industry peers. Our view moved lower on three prominent components: Veralto Corporation (VLTO) A to D on the sentiment around it, Corteva Inc (CTVA) C to E, and Apple Inc. (AAPL) B to D on its price behaviour. In each case, our updated metrics identified worsening peer-relative characteristics, whether through cooling sentiment or deteriorating price behaviour, leading directly to lower quality tiers in our assessments.

At the same time, our assessment improved on several companies across the S&P 500. EasyAlpha raised its grades on Rollins Inc (ROL) E to B on the sentiment around it, Equifax Inc (EFX) E to D on the sentiment around it, and CDW Corp (CDW) E to D on its price behaviour. These adjustments mark real shifts in our internal view of peer-relative quality, driven directly by our updated data inputs on sentiment and price behaviour relative to industry peers.

In round-the-clock trading benchmarks, overnight activity remained relatively subdued before the New York open. As of 10:25 am New York, the primary moves came from silver -1.0%, the euro against the dollar -0.8%, the pound against the dollar -0.5%, and gold -0.4%. These currency and commodity benchmarks traded within tight ranges, providing a calm backdrop across global assets as New York prepares to begin the final trading session of the week.

Corporate earnings activity is quiet this morning, with 0 covered companies scheduled to report results during Friday, October 2. The corporate reporting calendar will accelerate substantially soon, however, with 22 covered companies slated to release quarterly financial results over the coming week.

Several individual stocks are worth watching today following notable corporate actions, regulatory developments, and sharp session-to-session volume. Air Products and Chemicals Inc (APD) filed a regulatory disclosure regarding insider transactions. Shares of Coherent Inc (COHR) drew fresh market interest after reports indicated potential federal restrictions on Chinese optical transceivers used in artificial intelligence data centers. Meanwhile, Corteva Inc (CTVA) faces continued market attention after entering a $35 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission and twelve states over customer loyalty programs tied to pesticide distribution.

Yesterday's sharpest movers also carry significant momentum into the open. Strong individual gainers included Accenture plc (ACN) +15.8%, which climbed after delivering quarterly revenue that surpassed executive guidance, and Synopsys Inc (SNPS) +12.8%, following an investor presentation detailing above-consensus long-term revenue targets alongside new cloud and artificial intelligence agreements with Amazon Web Services and OpenAI. On the downside, the session's steepest decliners included Paramount Skydance Corporation Class B Common Stock (PSKY) -9.6%, as markets evaluated the debt financing costs and leverage required for its planned media acquisition, alongside Corteva Inc (CTVA) -83.8%.

When an individual company experiences a catastrophic single-day drop, the driver is almost always isolated to its own operations, legal liabilities, or balance sheet structure. Severe regulatory penalties, sudden litigation liabilities, or abrupt disruptions to core business practices force investors to immediately revalue that single business from scratch. This type of aggressive repricing reflects company-specific vulnerability rather than a sign of broader financial distress across the economy. A broad equity index comprises hundreds of businesses operating across diverse sectors with completely independent revenue streams and balance sheets. When a single firm reprices violently, the financial impact is absorbed by the wider market, where the fundamental health of the broader economy remains intact. For an investor, understanding this structural distinction prevents an isolated corporate crisis from being mistaken for a systemic market breakdown.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
