On Thursday, September 24, market breadth was narrow with 38% of the top 1000 companies finishing higher, while 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Trading volume matched routine activity at 102% of a typical day's volume, and the broader market remained -1.4% from its peak. It was a calm session that left underlying market conditions steady, as strength in a small cluster of major technology and communication names neutralized broad softness across cyclical and defensive sectors.
The S&P 500 finished -0.1% as SPY closed at $767.27, while the Nasdaq 100 ended 0.0%. The Dow closed -0.3%. Major indexes spent the morning absorbing pressure after Middle East tensions pushed crude oil prices higher and drove long-term Treasury yields higher. Stocks later recovered from their lows on reports that negotiators were discussing terms to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Sector leadership was heavily concentrated at the top. Communication Services paced the market at +1.9%, propelled by strong advances in heavyweight platform stocks. Meta Platforms Inc. finished +4.5%, while Alphabet Inc Class C ended +1.2%. Healthcare also provided support as Eli Lilly and Company finished +2.8%. Conversely, Consumer Staples trailed the market at -1.1%, and profit taking in leading semiconductor stocks after extended runs checked gains in the broader tech sector. Across the board, only 34.1% of constituent stocks moved higher.
Under the surface, fundamental risk measures showed that core market conditions remained stable. The VIX closed at 14.2, indicating subdued expectations for short-term price swings. In credit markets, high-yield spreads stood at 2.73%, measuring the extra yield lenders demand from risky borrowers. In rates, the yield curve between 10-year and 2-year Treasuries sat at +0.26 points, maintaining its positive slope even as swings in energy prices and elevated bond yields kept fixed-income markets on edge.
