  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Seagate Technology PLC B among Technology peers, reflecting solid profitability alongside elevated valuation risk.
  • The day: Shares fell 10.2% to close at $848.99 after reports of rival production expansion.
  • Watching: Next quarterly earnings scheduled for Tuesday, October 27.

Trading volume surged to 3.6x the 20-session average during Friday's retreat. The sharp drop marked the stock's ninth-largest daily decline over the past year and its steepest slide since Thursday, July 30, pushing shares -7.4% for the week.

The selloff followed reports that rival Toshiba plans to invest $380 million to double its hard disk drive production capacity at its facilities in the Philippines. The expansion is aimed at capturing demand from artificial intelligence data centers, with Toshiba targeting an increase in its market share from roughly 10% to 30% by fiscal 2027. Investors reacted to concerns that additional manufacturing capacity could create future pricing pressure across the hard-drive industry, where tight supply has underpinned corporate margins.

EasyAlpha's metrics show a business operating from a position of operational strength. EasyAlpha grades the company B compared to its industry peers in the S&P 500, indicating good quality. In EasyAlpha's historical research, companies graded A or B have delivered stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. The company's standout scored dimension is profitability, demonstrated by a 26.1% profit margin, a 37.1% return on equity, and quarterly revenue growth of +48.5%.

The challenge in the profile is valuation. Even after the session's pullback, the stock trades at 65.8 times trailing earnings and sits 308.6% above its 52-week low. Wall Street remains broadly optimistic, with 88.0% of the 25 analysts covering the stock rating it a buy and setting an average price target of $1,125.00. Yet with the stock trading at rich pricing multiples after major gains this year, the market reacted swiftly to the prospect of long-term supply expansion.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
