  • Our read: Seagate Technology PLC is graded E by EasyAlpha while 88.0% of 25 analyst ratings are buys, with solid profitability outweighed by a deteriorating price trend compared to S&P 500 peers.
  • The day: Shares fell 10.2% to close at $848.99 on Friday, October 2 after a rival announced plans to double hard drive manufacturing capacity.
  • Watching: The next quarterly earnings report scheduled for Tuesday, October 27.

On Friday, October 2, Seagate shares experienced their ninth-largest daily decline over the past year and their largest single-day drop since Thursday, July 30. Trading volume climbed to 3.6x the 20-session average as investors reacted to news that Toshiba plans to double its hard drive production capacity. Competitor Western Digital dropped by an almost identical amount during the same session.

The steep drop reflects how dependent the recent storage rally has been on product scarcity. Surging demand from artificial intelligence data centers has allowed drive makers to enjoy substantial pricing power across high-capacity products. That pricing strength helped keep Seagate shares +208.3% so far this year. However, high margins inevitably attract new manufacturing investments, and Toshiba's capacity expansion signaled that supply constraints may loosen sooner than expected.

Seagate's recent operating performance demonstrates the financial benefits of that tight market. Quarterly revenue rose +48.5% year over year, while the company converted 26.1% of revenue into net profit. To protect its competitive position, Seagate has transitioned to heat-assisted magnetic recording technology in its high-capacity drives.

Even with strong profitability, elevated valuation multiples make the stock sensitive to supply shifts. The shares trade at 61.0 times trailing earnings and 25.7 times forward earnings. EasyAlpha graded Seagate E entering the session, down from B. That rating diverges sharply from the consensus target of $1,125.00, which implies +32.5% upside from current levels.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
