The Information Technology sector recorded +0.7% on Friday, September 18, standing out as 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Its primary exchange-traded fund, Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), closed +0.8% at $189.61. That gain, however, rested on a narrow base of heavyweights. Only 43.8% of the sector's stocks finished higher, while the equal-weighted sector move was +0.2%. Individual moves were led by Sandisk Corp (+11.0%) and Coherent Inc (+7.2%), while Qualcomm Incorporated (-5.8%) was the primary laggard.

The move in mega-cap technology followed commentary from Nvidia leadership indicating that data center computing demand is accelerating. That optimism helped semiconductor shares recover after concerns regarding artificial intelligence governance pressured the group earlier in the week.

Sentiment across the chip space was also supported by reports of potential domestic manufacturing partnerships for memory production. At the same time, broader headwinds capped the sector's advance, as rising Treasury yields pressured equity valuations and data center financing costs. Elsewhere in the sector, Adobe announced a leadership change, naming a new chief executive to navigate intensifying competition across generative creative tools.

For investors tracking the sector through XLK, the vehicle holds $121.4 billion with an expense ratio of 0.08%. The underlying portfolio maintains solid quality, with 63.4% of its holdings graded A or B by EasyAlpha. Across historical data, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and experienced lower risk of major drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The day continues a broader multi-month rebound for technology shares. Over recent windows, XLK stands at +3.3% over the past month and +40.2% over the past six months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
