  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades ServiceNow C, indicating average quality relative to technology peers in the S&P 500, where a sound debt load is balanced against vulnerabilities in earnings quality.
  • The day: Shares fell 3.0% to close at $150.13 on Wednesday, October 28 as the stock slipped ahead of quarterly earnings.
  • Watching: Management's projected 18.5% growth rate for fourth-quarter contracted backlog represents the key operational metric to monitor next.

On Wednesday, October 28, ServiceNow Inc shares fell 3.0% to close at $150.13, extending a losing streak to three consecutive sessions. The move was an ordinary session pullback within the stock's typical trading band, driven by cautious positioning as shares slipped ahead of quarterly earnings. Trading activity was elevated, running at 2.5x the 20-session average as market participants adjusted holdings before the numbers crossed the tape.

The caution proved warranted once the report arrived Wednesday evening. Third-quarter revenue grew to $4.11 billion, but adjusted earnings per share of $1.00 missed Wall Street forecasts of $1.02. More concerning for investors was forward guidance: management projected fourth-quarter current remaining performance obligations to grow 18.5%, a marked deceleration from 21% in the third quarter. That slowing backlog trajectory quickly overshadowed positive announcements, including an expanded partnership with OpenAI and a raised full-year target of $1.7 billion in artificial intelligence contract value.

ServiceNow carried that average quality profile into Wednesday's session. EasyAlpha grades ServiceNow C among technology peers in the S&P 500. In EasyAlpha's historical research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. A manageable debt load is offset by ongoing pressure on earnings quality.

Valuation magnifies that vulnerability. ServiceNow trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 96.7 and a forward multiple of 31.1, leaving little margin for operational deceleration. Wall Street analysts remain broadly optimistic, with 91.8% of covering analysts rating the stock a buy and maintaining an average price target of $157.12. Yet when expectations are set this high, slowing forward growth can quickly test investor patience.

  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
