On Friday, October 16, trading closed with Silver +2.4%, outpacing all other major assets on the benchmark tracker. The metal advanced as the U.S. dollar softened across international markets.

Gold also moved higher alongside silver, finishing the session with Gold +0.8%. The gains coincided with broader market turbulence as major equity indexes fell on concerns over corporate borrowing for artificial intelligence investments. Technology shares faced the sharpest pressure during the sell-off, with large semiconductor and software makers dropping amid worries that heavy capital spending cannot be maintained if borrowing costs stay elevated.

In currency markets, the dollar softened after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh shied away from offering fresh guidance on future interest rate moves, noting he would not prejudge upcoming central bank decisions. European currencies strengthened as a result, with the pound +0.4% against the dollar and the euro +0.2% against the dollar. The Japanese yen remained flat on the day, with the yen 0.0% against the dollar.

In digital assets, which appear alongside traditional benchmarks because investors hold them rather than because they measure underlying economic activity, trading showed Bitcoin -0.8% and Ethereum -0.8%.

In round-the-clock trading following Friday's close, benchmark levels continued to shift. By 10:40 am New York, electronic trading showed silver +0.6%, while currency tracking recorded the euro against the dollar -0.3%.

For the week ahead, market participants have several scheduled economic reports to monitor. On Monday, homebuilder sentiment arrives through the housing market index. On Tuesday, the government releases September figures for new residential construction and building permits. On Thursday, the weekly release of initial jobless claims provides an updated reading on labor market conditions. The week concludes on Friday with the final monthly report on consumer sentiment, before the Federal Reserve convenes for its next monetary policy meeting later in the month.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
