On Tuesday, October 27, the exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) closed +0.8%, driven by smaller constituents while breadth across the sector remained positive. The equal-weighted sector ended +1.0%, running ahead of the cap-weighted sector mark of +0.8%, as 58.3% of the sector's stocks finished the session higher. EasyAlpha's peer-relative grades show that top-tier quality across the sector remains limited, with only 35.5% of the fund's graded assets held in companies graded A or B. Gains were led by The Mosaic Company closing +6.1%, which helped counter a drag from heavyweight Sherwin-Williams Co, which closed -2.8%. Basic materials participated in a broader market advance during a risk-on session tied to upcoming Federal Reserve guidance, while Sherwin-Williams retreated following its third-quarter financial report.

The divergence between the day's leaders and its laggard reflected specific corporate and cyclical catalysts. Sherwin-Williams reported an earnings miss, narrowed its full-year earnings outlook, and cited cost pressures and muted demand. Meanwhile, Albemarle Corp closed +6.0%, though our sources show no reported company-specific driver for the day's advance in either Albemarle Corp or The Mosaic Company.

The session fit into a constructive day across equities, where 7 of the 11 sectors rose. For XLB, Tuesday's advance added to a steadier stretch following a difficult year. The fund closed at $51.81, placing its move over the past month at +4.7%. Those recent gains come against a steeper backdrop, as the fund shows -41.8% over the past twelve months.

While the fund provides low-cost access with an expense ratio of 0.08% across $7.8 billion in net assets, buying the full sector basket provides limited exposure to top-tier companies. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
