Smaller Names Pace Communication Services as Quality Stays Thin
A broad advance lifted communication services as smaller holdings outpaced heavyweights, even while companies graded A or B make up less than a quarter of the sector fund.

The advance across Communication Services on Thursday, October 15 showed unusually broad participation, but leadership came from smaller names rather than its highest-quality core. Within the group, 77.8% of S&P 500 members advanced. Smaller constituents outworked the mega-cap heavyweights, sending the equal-weighted sector move to +2.4% against +0.6% for the cap-weighted sector. The exchange-traded fund tracking the group, Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), finished +1.4%, propelled by gains in advertising and platform stocks like Reddit, Inc. at +7.2% and Applovin Corp at +6.5%. The session's primary laggard was EchoStar Corporation, which finished -1.1%. At the same time, EasyAlpha's quality assessment shows that only 23.8% of the fund's graded holdings hold an A or B grade across the 85.7% of portfolio assets evaluated. The advance gained traction as sharply lower Treasury yields supported cyclical and rate-sensitive equities while market participants rotated away from artificial intelligence and semiconductor leaders.
The advance also drew support from entertainment names. In media, Skydance rebounded as selling pressure tied to a warrant adjustment subsided, while peers like Netflix and Disney also gained. That followed pressure the prior week, when a spectrum transaction involving SpaceX had unsettled telecom investors.
Thursday's performance unfolded in a broader market where 7 of the 11 sectors rose. Yet the quality profile under the hood warrants context. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because only 23.8% of the fund's graded weight meets that standard, the vast majority of the portfolio resides in average or lower tiers.
The session provided relief, but it follows a difficult multi-month stretch. Over the past 100 sessions, XLC stands at -2.7%, and the fund sits at -2.6% over the past twelve months. Breadth was broad on the day, but a single session driven by smaller, lower-tier constituents does not by itself resolve those deeper return deficits.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
