On Friday, September 4, the market experienced a contained pullback that left broader conditions steady. Only 3 of the 11 sectors rose, and 41% of the top 1000 companies closed higher across the session. Trading volume reached 92% of a typical day's volume. The S&P 500 closed -0.4%, leaving the index -1.0% from its all-time high and +8.5% from its long-term moving average. While the day brought modest selling, the move represented a routine reaction rather than a shift in market structure.

Selling followed economic data that highlighted sustained strength in the labor market. Fresh government data showed that nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August, while previous months saw combined upward revisions of 55,000 jobs and the unemployment rate held at 4.1%. The robust numbers pushed Treasury yields higher as traders reassessed Federal Reserve interest rate expectations, placing pressure on rate-sensitive equities.

Heavyweight technology and consumer shares accounted for most of the pressure on the major indexes. The biggest single drags came from Apple Inc. (-2.5%), Tesla Inc (-5.9%), and Microsoft Corporation (-2.0%). Sector performance reflected this split: Consumer Discretionary lagged the field at -1.5%, while Industrials proved the most resilient group, finishing at +0.4%. Even as major tech retreated, Arista Networks outperformed competitors on the session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average moved -0.5%, while small-cap equities diverged from the large-cap benchmarks, finishing +0.3%.

Key risk measures showed minimal signs of wider stress across factors. Expected volatility remained muted, with the VIX settling at 14.3 and its term structure ratio at 0.82. In credit markets, high-yield spreads closed at 2.65%, alongside a positive Treasury yield curve spread of +0.43 points.
