On Friday, the Communication Services sector retreated even as 9 of the 11 sectors rose. EasyAlpha numbers show that only 22.4% of the graded weight in the exchange-traded fund Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC) sits in companies graded A or B. Internally, only 38.9% of the sector's S&P 500 members posted gains on the session. The fund was driven lower primarily by T-Mobile US Inc, which closed -13.3%. That slump came as SpaceX agreed to acquire nationwide 800 MHz wireless spectrum, raising concerns about direct satellite competition for traditional cellular networks.

SpaceX stated that the agreement to acquire up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum was designed to address a technical gap and support Starlink Mobile's expansion across the country. That announcement rattled the telecom industry, as investors grew concerned about emerging competition from satellite-based mobile services. The prospect of direct satellite competition unsettled investors in major wireless providers including AT&T and Verizon alongside T-Mobile.

The heavy losses among carriers showed up immediately in how different weightings behaved. On a cap-weighted basis, the sector finished -0.5%, while XLC closed -1.5%. However, an equal-weighted view of the sector was -2.4%. The wide gap between cap-weighted and equal-weighted performance reflects how thoroughly the telecom drop infected the broader group. Digital media and software names provided some balance against the wireless drag. On Friday, Reddit, Inc. closed +2.1%, which helped keep the cap-weighted sector from reflecting the full extent of the telecom selloff.

Investors using XLC pay an annual expense ratio of 0.08% to track the sector. While the fund includes digital platforms and entertainment companies, its wireless exposure means competitive shifts in telecom can weigh on the fund even when other sectors rally.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
