The exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) closed +0.2% on Wednesday, October 21, with only 39.0% of its graded weight concentrated in companies graded A or B. Breadth was moderately positive across the sector, with 58.3% of its member stocks posting gains. Individual performance was led by Steel Dynamics Inc, which finished +1.5%, while CF Industries Holdings Inc weighed on the group by closing -1.4%. That subdued session arrived as broader equities drew support from stronger-than-expected corporate earnings, lifting market sentiment.

Among the sector's top contributors, Steel Dynamics Inc continued to benefit from its quarterly financial results. The steelmaker posted $756 million in third-quarter net income, driven by record shipping volumes, firm product pricing, and reduced costs for scrap metal. Separately, Linde doubled its on-site industrial gas capacity for Tata Steel in India. By contrast, agricultural chemical producer CF Industries Holdings Inc lagged the sector, though our sources show no company-specific announcements behind the move.

Internal sector numbers showed that larger capitalization stocks provided slightly more lift than smaller peers. On a cap-weighted basis, the sector ended +0.2%, while an equal-weighted measure of the same stocks finished +0.1%. When cap-weighted returns exceed equal-weighted returns, the sector's largest companies are doing a greater share of the work. Across the broader market, 7 of the 11 sectors rose, placing materials alongside a wide but modest advance across the equity market.

For investors tracking the sector through XLB, returns show a noticeable contrast between short-term results and longer periods. Over the past month, the fund stands +1.5%, and it is +0.8% over the past 100 sessions. Over longer horizons, however, the fund remains lower, sitting -1.0% over six months and -42.1% over the past twelve months.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
