On Wednesday, September 2, the Materials sector advanced with broad internal participation, as 87.5% of its stocks climbed and steel producers drove the fund. The exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) gained +1.7% to close at $52.97, led by Steel Dynamics Inc (+5.8%) and Nucor Corp (+4.8%). The move followed renewed investor demand for basic resources as markets wagered on rising inflation and tightening raw-material supplies.
Steel producers saw an additional catalyst as producers raised benchmark hot-rolled coil prices by $5 per ton, marking the sixth straight week of price increases. The sector's advance came alongside a broader market rebound where stocks rose as oil prices and bond yields held relatively steady, as 10 of the 11 sectors rose.
Breadth was solid across the sector. The cap-weighted Materials group rose +1.8%, while the equal-weighted sector gained +1.9%. Because the equal-weighted return slightly exceeded the cap-weighted result, smaller and mid-sized companies contributed slightly more to the advance than the sector's largest members. Selling was minimal across the group, with International Paper (-0.4%) as the primary laggard.
For investors tracking the sector through XLB, the session brought the fund's one-month gain to +1.9%. Yet EasyAlpha's quality analysis highlights a structural divide across the sector's holdings. Across the stocks EasyAlpha grades in the fund, only 46.4% of the portfolio weight sits in companies graded A or B.
EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Historically, companies graded A or B demonstrate stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because more than half of the fund's weight resides in companies graded C or lower, broad gains across the sector often depend on lower-rated cyclical companies benefiting when commodity prices rise.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
