Selling on Tuesday, September 1 touched most of the market, with only 32% of 492 members finishing higher as 4 of the 11 sectors rose. Trading volume came in at 106% of a typical day's volume. Even with the broad pullback, the S&P 500 sits -2.1% from its all-time high and remains +7.5% above its 200-day moving average. The day generated noise across major indexes, but it did not dislodge the broader market trend.

Major indexes closed lower across the board in a broad pullback. The S&P 500 declined -0.7%, the Dow fell -0.7%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 slid -1.3%, while the Russell 2000 dropped -1.1%. The S&P 500 proxy SPY closed at $761.72.

Renewed geopolitical conflict in the Middle East drove trading throughout the session. Attacks on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices sharply higher, reviving inflation and interest-rate concerns. The geopolitical tension and rising energy costs triggered a global bond selloff and increased expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike.

Sector performance diverged across the market during Tuesday's session. Energy was the top-performing group, gaining +1.5%. In contrast, Consumer Discretionary was the weakest group, falling -1.9%. Among major single-stock drivers by index weight, Apple Inc. (+2.6%) advanced, while NVIDIA Corporation (-1.5%) and Amazon.com Inc (-1.9%) ended the session lower.

The broader market backdrop showed little sign of spillover from the day's equity losses. High-yield credit spreads sit at 2.63%, having narrowed by -0.15 points over recent weeks. At the same time, the VIX closed at 14.9 with a term structure ratio of 0.85, keeping volatility measures near recent ranges despite the geopolitical friction.
