Trading tilted decisively negative on Wednesday, September 23, with only 31% of the top 1000 companies managing to finish higher. Selling touched almost every corner of the market as 1 of the 11 sectors rose on volume reaching 132% of a typical day's volume. Even with the broad decline, SPY closed -1.3% from its record peak, marking a loud session on elevated volume that nudged the market off its highs without breaking its underlying trend. The S&P 500 closed -0.7%, the Nasdaq 100 finished -0.8%, the Dow settled -0.7%, and the small-cap Russell 2000 ended -1.8%. Equities retreated after flash composite PMI data showed business activity accelerating to 58.4, its fastest pace in over five years, which lifted Treasury yields and revived expectations of further rate increases.

The session's only advancing group was Energy, which settled at +1.1%, aided by gains in individual energy names like ConocoPhillips. Meanwhile, rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty added to headwinds for the broader market. In contrast, rate-sensitive and defensive groups faced the heaviest pressure, led by Utilities at -1.9%.

Technology and consumer mega-caps also weighed heavily on the broader market as higher benchmark yields pressured rate-sensitive growth shares. Individual decliners included Alphabet Inc Class C, which closed lower on the session at -3.6%. Weakness extended across other large index constituents, with Amazon.com Inc finishing -2.2%.

Despite the broad equity drop, credit and volatility measures showed little sign of broader stress. High-yield credit spreads closed at 2.68%, reflecting steady risk pricing among corporate borrowers. The VIX ended at 14.2, pointing to measured expectations for equity swings.
