Only 39% of the top 1000 companies finished higher on Wednesday, October 14, and 3 of the 11 sectors rose as trading volume climbed to 128% of a typical day's volume. Despite the broad selling, the market sits -1.2% from its peak. It was a loud day that changed nothing about the market's underlying trend. The selling took hold after consumer prices rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% over the year. Worsening inflation pushed bond yields higher, which weighed directly on equities and pressured major indexes throughout the day.
The S&P 500 closed -1.1%, with SPY ending at $769.67. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 absorbed the brunt of the downturn, finishing -2.0%, while the Dow ended -0.1%. Selling concentrated in growth names as higher borrowing costs rattled rate-sensitive shares. That rotation left Information Technology trailing all peers at -2.6%. Megacap technology led the drop, with NVIDIA Corporation closing -3.2%, alongside losses in Microsoft and Alphabet. In contrast, Consumer Staples posted +2.5%.
Corporate earnings also added friction to the session. Bank of America fell after reporting lower quarterly net income and absorbing a regulatory charge, reinforcing the cautious tone across Wall Street. The pressure from the bank's weaker results compounded the broader pullback across large-capitalization shares, keeping major benchmarks on the defensive through the close.
Despite the headline declines, underlying risk measures signaled composure rather than distress. Volatility expectations remained restrained, with the VIX closing at 15.3 and the term structure ratio sitting at 0.85. Because the ratio remains well below one, the reading does not signal acute stress. More broadly, the market maintains solid insulation against short-term shocks: SPY trades +6.5% above its 200-day moving average, well above levels that would signal structural damage.
