Trading on Wednesday, October 28 was quiet and narrow, leaving the market to sit -0.9% from its peak on 73% of a typical day's volume. Market participation was evenly split, with 52% of the top 1000 companies finishing higher while 6 of the 11 sectors rose. It was a muted session that edged index prices slightly upward without altering the broader market environment.
Major indexes posted modest advances across the board. The S&P 500 finished +0.4%, the Nasdaq 100 closed +0.6%, and the Dow ended +0.3%. Small caps tracked the same range, with the Russell 2000 finishing +0.4%. Much of that support came from technology shares, where strong quarterly earnings from memory producer SK Hynix reinforced confidence in artificial intelligence spending. At the same time, investors positioned ahead of earnings reports from major tech companies. Macro developments also kept trading orderly after the Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged, avoiding any surprise shift in policy.
Those crosscurrents showed up clearly in sector leadership. Information Technology led the day, finishing +0.5%, while defensive groups saw selling, with Utilities closing -0.9%. Within the semiconductor industry, Micron Technology Inc ended +5.9%, gaining alongside broader chip optimism. Among the market's largest individual weights, Alphabet Inc Class C closed +1.6% ahead of its scheduled earnings announcement. By contrast, NVIDIA Corporation finished -1.2%, illustrating that mega-cap technology gains were selective rather than uniform.
Expected price swings remained contained to close the session. The VIX finished at 17.5, while realized volatility over the past month held at 9.8%, pointing to narrow day-to-day fluctuations rather than elevated turbulence. In rates markets, the yield curve remained positive, with the 10-year minus 2-year Treasury yield sitting at +0.29 points.
