Under the surface of a quiet session, market breadth told a resilient story on Tuesday, October 20. Across the equity market, 77% of the top 1000 companies closed higher, while 9 of the 11 sectors rose and the market finished -1.2% from its peak. Trading activity remained muted, with session volume coming in at 82% of a typical day's volume. It was a day where buying broadened noticeably across traditional sectors, but lighter turnover and restrained moves at the index level meant the session reshuffled leadership rather than changing underlying market conditions.

Benchmark indexes reflected that internal split. The S&P 500 closed +0.4%, with SPY ending the session at $769.32. The Dow finished +1.1%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 closed -0.1%. A wave of better-than-expected corporate earnings reports provided the initial spark, encouraging investors to look beyond megacap technology and put money to work in value-oriented companies. Sentiment also received support as oil prices retreated.

That dynamic produced clear separation across sectors. Defensive and healthcare shares took charge, with Health Care leading the session to finish +2.4%. Within the group, Moderna reached a new 52-week high of $242.54. In contrast, Communication Services trailed the tape, finishing -0.8%. Megacap technology faced headwind from investor caution regarding the pace and cost of artificial intelligence buildouts, which kept a lid on the broader technology complex and capped gains for the market proxy.

Broader risk indicators showed that the session's rotation unfolded in an orderly environment. The VIX closed at 18.4, pointing to subdued expectations for near-term equity swings. In the bond market, the high-yield credit spread closed at 3.29%, the extra yield lenders demand from risky borrowers. Together, these signals confirmed that the movement between sectors was driven by portfolio rebalancing rather than signs of systemic distress.
