The market sat just -0.1% from its record high on Tuesday, October 13, but beneath that perch lay a quiet, indecisive session that changed nothing. Across the market, 49% of the top 1000 companies managed to finish higher, just 4 of the 11 sectors rose, and trading volume shrank to 58% of a typical day's volume. It was an uneventful day that left broader market conditions intact without generating any forward push. At the close, the S&P 500 finished 0.0% as SPY closed at $778.05, while the Dow closed -0.3% and the Nasdaq 100 closed -0.3%.
The muted performance reflected conflicting earnings reports and broader macro hesitation. The third-quarter earnings season opened with crosscurrents, as major banks posted solid profits but warned that persistent inflation and elevated interest rates could burden borrowers. At the same time, technology shares faced renewed pressure as investors weighed heavy artificial intelligence capital expenditures and rising Chinese competition in semiconductor manufacturing. Those competing forces left corporate results largely offsetting one another near record highs.
Sector performance split along similar lines. Energy led the session with +1.8%, while Marathon Petroleum outperformed competitors. On the losing side, Health Care trailed all peers with -1.2%. Within the technology sector, large-cap moves diverged sharply. NVIDIA Corporation finished +1.0%, providing steady support to the market cap weighted benchmarks. However, Applied Materials underperformed competitors, while Micron Technology Inc ended -3.6%.
Beneath the daily noise, underlying risk indicators showed little evidence of systemic pressure. Expected market volatility remained contained, with the VIX closing at 15.2 and realized volatility over the past month registering 9.5%. In credit markets, high-yield spreads stood at 3.11%, having shifted +0.40 points over recent weeks.
