As the opening bell approaches on Wednesday, September 16, the U.S. stock market stands slightly below its recent peak following a subdued session on Tuesday, September 15. The S&P 500 closed -0.5% with SPY finishing at $757.39, leaving the broader market -2.6% from its record high. Other major indexes showed similar weakness across the board: the Dow closed -0.6%, the Nasdaq 100 finished -0.7%, and the Russell 2000 index of small caps registered -0.7%. Beneath those moderate headline percentage changes, market participation was narrow. Only 32.7% of large U.S. companies finished the day higher, indicating that selling pressure was distributed broadly across the market rather than isolated to a few sectors.
While New York was shut, EasyAlpha completed its daily scoring run and re-graded several members of the S&P 500. These grade changes reflect updates in our own assessment of company quality against industry peers, rather than corporate announcements or external rating agency actions. On the upgrade side, our assessment raised Arista Networks (ANET) C to B on its price behaviour. We also upgraded our view on Dell Technologies Inc (DELL) D to B on its price behaviour, and lifted our rating on NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) D to C on its price behaviour. In each instance, improvements in price behavior drove the higher evaluation in our daily run.
At the same time, our updated analysis resulted in lower grades for several other S&P 500 companies where underlying measures deteriorated. Our assessment lowered Axon Enterprise Inc. (AXON) D to E on the sentiment around it. We also reduced our grade on Pentair PLC (PNR) C to E on the sentiment around it, while lowering our view on Cintas Corporation (CTAS) B to D on the sentiment around it. Across these downgrades, weakening sentiment was the primary factor behind the reduced quality grade.
In round-the-clock trading, international currency markets and precious metals benchmarks experienced modest adjustments overnight. As of 10:25 am New York, price action showed silver +0.6%, the yen against the dollar -0.5%, the pound against the dollar -0.2%, and gold -0.1%.
Looking ahead to the trading day on Wednesday, September 16, corporate earnings activity remains quiet. There are 5 covered companies scheduled to report results during today's session, out of 21 reporting over the next seven days. The primary scheduled report after the close comes from Lennar Corporation (LEN, graded E), which enters its quarterly release with our lowest quality tier. Earlier in the session, unscheduled reports are expected from Seabridge Gold Inc. (SA, graded D), AnaptysBio Inc (ANAB, graded C), Rezolute Inc (RZLT, graded D).
In individual company developments, several names are active and worth watching ahead of the open. For Intel Corporation (INTC), an institutional regulatory filing revealed that Bank of America acquired 8,342,514 shares. For Sysco Corporation (SYY), a regulatory filing disclosed that an executive sold $79,680 in company stock. Meanwhile, UL Solutions Inc. (ULS) fell to a 52-week low during the prior session on elevated trading volume. Date-specific searches across financial news and company disclosures showed no confirmed corporate announcement or reported catalyst explaining the drop, making the price movement itself the primary item on the tape.
Market participants will also be watching whether momentum persists from the sharpest individual stock moves of the previous session. On the positive side, outsized gains were led by Skyworks Solutions Inc (SWKS) +13.6% and Revvity Inc. (RVTY) +9.1%. On the downside, steep drops occurred in Coinbase Global Inc (COIN) -10.1% and Axon Enterprise Inc. (AXON) -9.8%, with Axon Enterprise also receiving a lower quality grade in our overnight evaluation.
This morning's numbers highlight a fundamental investing concept: market breadth, or the proportion of individual stocks advancing alongside the major indexes. Headline indexes like the S&P 500 are weighted by market capitalization, which means that the largest corporations have a massive influence on the index's overall movement. When an index records a modest move like -0.5%, it is easy to assume that most individual holdings experienced a quiet day. However, looking at market breadth reveals a very different picture. On Tuesday, September 15, only 32.7% of tracked large U.S. companies finished higher. That means most individual equities lost ground. When an index slips only slightly while the broad majority of individual companies decline, the headline index is masking broader weakness across the overall market.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
