  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Synopsys Inc C, reflecting a middle-tier profile among S&P 500 peers where solid growth contrasts with softer profitability, even with 76.0% of Wall Street analysts holding buy ratings.
  • The day: The shares gained 4.8% to close at $434.94 on 2.4x normal volume after the company announced an Amazon agreement valued at more than $1 billion alongside updated financial targets.
  • Watching: Execution of the company's planned $1 billion share repurchase authorization and adoption of the new royalty licensing model.

Synopsys saw a series of major strategic announcements on Wednesday. The headline event was a multi-year agreement valued at more than $1 billion with Amazon, positioning the cloud provider as the lead customer for application-optimized silicon intellectual property. Under the pact, Amazon will apply Synopsys design and simulation software to its custom processors, including Graviton and Trainium, while shifting the relationship to a license-plus-royalty model tied to manufacturing volumes. Synopsys also announced a collaboration with OpenAI to develop specialized artificial intelligence models for chip design.

Management reinforced the positive tone during its 2026 investor day, setting a fiscal 2027 revenue target of approximately $11.15 billion and announcing a plan to repurchase about $1 billion in common stock. Investors responded with notable demand, lifting the shares +5.3% across the past five trading sessions.

The expansion in deal activity aligns with the company's operating momentum. Revenue expanded +42.4% year over year in the latest quarter, making growth the primary engine supporting the stock. That demand reflects a broader industry shift as cloud providers increasingly build proprietary processors for artificial intelligence workloads.

Despite that top-line trajectory, EasyAlpha grades Synopsys Inc C against its industry peers in the S&P 500. In EasyAlpha's grading framework, C represents average quality, a typical company for its industry. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Synopsys is held back by profitability: its profit margin of 11.4% and return on equity of 3.7% trail the sector's top performers. In addition, a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 72.6 leaves little margin for operational stumbles.

Wall Street analysts take an aggressive stance on the name. Among 25 covering analysts, 76.0% issue buy ratings, with a consensus price target of $553.77 that implies 27.3% upside from the current close. Even after Wednesday's gain, the stock remains 19.4% below its 52-week peak. The divergence between Wall Street's enthusiasm and EasyAlpha's middle-tier grade highlights the difference between betting on new contract announcements and requiring peer-leading profitability.

  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
