Our grade
52-week range
- Our read: Targa Resources Inc is graded D by EasyAlpha while 95.5% of 22 analyst ratings are buys in the Energy sector of the S&P 500, where high marks for efficiency collide with warning flags in volume behavior.
- The day: The shares surged 4.3% to close at $294.79 on Friday, October 16 as analyst price target increases pointed to resilient Permian Basin volume growth.
- Watching: Third-quarter financial results scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.
On Friday, October 16, Targa Resources Inc delivered its fifth-largest daily gain of the past year, with the stock advancing 4.3% to finish at $294.79. The sharp rally followed updated research notes ahead of third-quarter results, as one brokerage lifted its price target to $322, arguing that gathering and processing throughput in the Permian Basin remains on a strong expansion path that should help offset near-term marketing headwinds. Another bank raised its target to $330. A Canadian investment bank boosted its target to $319.
The company had also announced a quarterly dividend of $1.25 per share.
Yet EasyAlpha's quantitative assessment paints a far more cautious picture than Wall Street's prevailing optimism. Targa Resources Inc carried a D grade from EasyAlpha into Friday's session relative to its industry peers in the S&P 500. In EasyAlpha's historical research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While 95.5% of the 22 analysts covering the stock recommend buying it, with an average target of $327.33 that sits 11.0% above Friday's close, our numbers show measurable vulnerabilities beneath the surface.
The strongest pillar of Targa's profile is efficiency. The business has generated a return on equity of 70.8%. However, that operational quality is counterbalanced by caution on volume behavior and an increasingly stretched valuation. The stock trades at 28.0 times trailing earnings after a sustained run that has brought it within 4.3% of its 52-week peak. Furthermore, Friday's sharp rally occurred on volume of just 0.9x its 20-session average.
The standoff between buoyant analyst expectations and quantitative restraint will find its test in reported operating figures. If Permian gathering and processing volumes continue to expand, Targa may sustain its valuation multiple. If operating growth slows, the lack of valuation cushion leaves the stock exposed. Third-quarter financial results, scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, will provide the tangible evidence needed to see which side of that divide has the stronger case.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
