Thursday was a top-heavy session that pulled major index benchmarks lower without shifting the market's broader foundation. Even as headline averages dipped, 64% of the top 1000 companies closed higher, and 6 of the 11 sectors rose. Trading volume was restrained, with SPY changing hands at 88% of a typical day's volume. The S&P 500 finished -0.4% and sits -0.7% from its peak. It was a loud pullback among mega-cap stocks that changed little beneath the surface.

The headline indexes reflected that split. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 closed -1.3%, while the Dow finished +0.1% and the small-cap Russell 2000 was 0.0%. SPY closed at $773.97. Pressure mounted across growth shares as Brent crude rose 4.1% to $104.28 a barrel while major technology and chip stocks fell. Equities faced further pressure from Middle East tensions and reduced domestic output, which stoked inflation and interest-rate fears alongside concerns over tech-company debt financing.

That rotation drove sector performance across the board. Information Technology was the session's weakest group at -1.8%, weighed down by steep declines in its largest constituents. NVIDIA Corporation finished -2.9%, while Broadcom Inc closed -4.3%. In contrast, Energy was the day's strongest group at +2.9%, drawing direct support from the rally in crude and keeping value-oriented sectors in positive territory. Within the sector, SLB drew a raised price target of $66 from $63.

Measures of market stress showed little change. The VIX closed at 15.1, and its term structure ratio stood at 0.85, well below the parity line that signals acute market stress. High-yield credit spreads closed at 3.09%, confirming that corporate lending channels remain orderly despite the day's decline in technology equities.
