On Tuesday, September 8, the exchange-traded fund Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) closed +0.3% at $187.87, while the broader Information Technology sector finished -0.1%. Inside the group, breadth was divided: advancers accounted for 45.7% of sector members, and an equal-weighted measure ended +0.2%. The session was driven by hardware and component suppliers rather than widespread strength, with 54.4% of the fund's graded weight concentrated in companies graded A or B. Gains were anchored by Lumentum Holdings Inc (+11.0%) and Intel Corporation (+9.1%), which outpaced peers following infrastructure announcements and pricing momentum.
Hardware and Infrastructure Catalysts
The primary spark for Tuesday's hardware rally came from physical infrastructure demand. Corning announced a multibillion-dollar supply agreement with Verizon covering more than 80 million miles of optical fiber to expand broadband and support artificial intelligence infrastructure. The contract spurred buying across optical networking providers, sending Lumentum Holdings Inc (+11.0%) to the top of the sector.
Semiconductor makers added further lift, led by Intel Corporation (+9.1%) following reports that the company looks primed to boost processor prices even more across its lineup. Demand for custom data center silicon also remained prominent, as Amazon Web Services partnered with Qualcomm to develop custom artificial intelligence silicon. Separately, Broadcom leadership emphasized that economic value is concentrating in frontier models and custom chips.
Divided Sector Breadth
Physical hardware strength contrasted with softness in enterprise services and software. On the downside, Gartner Inc (-7.4%) paced sector declines, where our sources show no reported company driver for the session's drop. Across the wider market, 2 of the 11 sectors rose on the day.
Over longer periods, XLK has rebounded from prior weakness, posting +34.4% over the past six months and -0.1% over the past month, though it stands -29.1% over the trailing twelve months. Managing $121.4 billion at an expense ratio of 0.08%, the fund concentrates heavy sector exposure into a low-cost vehicle where top-weighted hardware names can offset broader internal weakness.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
