The Information Technology sector showed a sharp internal split on Tuesday, October 20. Across the group, 58.7% of member companies posted gains, bringing the equal-weighted sector to +0.8%. Yet the cap-weighted sector ended at -0.3%, and the exchange-traded fund tracking the group, Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), closed -0.3%. Inside the portfolio, 37.0% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. That top-heavy drag took hold as investors questioned the pace and financial returns of corporate artificial intelligence investments, creating headwinds for semiconductor heavyweights. Those losses in major technology holdings came even as broader equity benchmarks registered solid advances.

That divergence left technology trailing the rest of the market on Tuesday, where 9 of the 11 sectors rose. The session's sharpest decline came from semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research Corp, which ended at -3.2%. The shares retreated as a global pullback hit chip equipment stocks. Company-specific pressure mounted after an analyst lowered its price target to $315 from $355 ahead of quarterly results.

In contrast to semiconductor weakness, specialized software and research companies supported the sector. Research and advisory provider Gartner Inc closed +5.7%, ranking as the sector's top performer after an analyst raised its price target to $235 on double-digit attendance growth at its annual symposium. Tyler Technologies Inc also finished among the leaders. Broadcom renewed its infrastructure software agreement with FedEx to support private cloud infrastructure.

Closing at $185.49, XLK stands at -4.8% over the past month and -35.6% over the past twelve months. Those medium-term figures show how heavily the cap-weighted fund reflects the fortunes of its largest members.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
