On Monday, October 5, the exchange-traded fund Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) closed +0.6% at $200.98, while the broader Information Technology sector finished +0.6%. Across the sector, 61.6% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, tiers that historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E when measured against their industry peers. Market breadth was moderately positive, with 54.8% of the sector's constituents advancing. Equal-weighted performance reached +0.9%, indicating that mid-sized and smaller companies delivered stronger gains than the largest cap-weighted constituents. The day's top gainer was PTC Inc, which finished +33.5% after Schneider Electric announced an agreement to acquire the industrial software company for $205 per share in a cash deal valued at approximately $22.6 billion.
Strength extended into hardware and storage names. Western Digital Corporation finished +6.3%, finding support as analysts reiterated that artificial intelligence infrastructure demand will keep hard disk drive supplies tight through 2028. Infrastructure demand for artificial intelligence also supported related technology providers, with equipment makers expanding cooling and modular systems for data centers to meet rising power needs. Broader technology shares also drew support as falling interest rate expectations and earnings optimism lifted large-cap tech.
Gains were not universal across the sector. Corning Incorporated was the primary drag, closing -2.9%, though our sources show no reported driver for the decline. Across the wider equity market, technology participated in a broad advance where 10 of the 11 sectors rose.
The fund's recent trajectory illustrates a sharp divergence across time horizons. While XLK is +46.2% over the past six months and +8.1% over the past month, its -29.4% mark over the past twelve months demonstrates that the sector is still climbing back from earlier steep losses.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
