On Thursday, September 17, the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), an exchange-traded fund tracking the Information Technology sector, finished +2.2% as 76.7% of its members advanced. The cap-weighted sector move of +2.1% ran ahead of the equal-weighted +1.7%, showing that the sector's largest holdings provided much of the day's push, while 44.4% of the fund's weight sits in companies graded A or B. Server providers Super Micro Computer Inc (+9.5%) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (+7.7%) drove the strongest gains within the group. Technology shares gained momentum after Nvidia stated that it expects to double its chip sales next year, lifting confidence across artificial intelligence supply chains.
The sharpest moves across the fund were concentrated in computing infrastructure and hardware providers. Super Micro Computer Inc (+9.5%) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (+7.7%) led all sector peers, taking part in a broad rally across server manufacturers. The hardware group drew additional support from forecasts of sustained artificial intelligence infrastructure spending. Not every large-cap holding participated in the advance, however, as Salesforce.com Inc (-3.0%) retreated during the session. Across the broader market, technology took part in a widespread equity advance where 10 of the 11 sectors rose.
Despite the day's strength, valuation questions continue to surround the sector's largest names. Market analysts have observed that multi-trillion-dollar valuations in artificial intelligence imply massive future revenue requirements across the broader corporate landscape to justify current infrastructure investment levels. Over longer windows, XLK has experienced notable swings. The fund stands at +1.3% over the past month, +17.1% over the multi-month chart window, and +35.9% over the past six months, though it remains -30.7% over the past twelve months.
The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, which closed at $188.06 with $121.4 billion in net assets at an expense ratio of 0.08%, reflects that split fundamental backdrop. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers on fundamental quality and historical risk characteristics. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With 44.4% of the fund's graded assets in companies graded A or B, the basket remains divided between top-tier fundamental strength and lower-graded holdings.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
