On Tuesday, trading was quiet and narrowly led. While 7 of the 11 sectors rose and the market sits -1.2% from its peak, broader participation was subdued: 54% of the top 1000 companies advanced, and volume ran at 69% of a typical day's volume. It was a quiet session that kept the market near its peak without widening broader participation. The S&P 500 closed +0.6% with SPY at $769.71, driven by technology, as semiconductor and artificial intelligence companies paced the advance ahead of key earnings reports and the Federal Reserve policy decision.
That technology focus created a clear divergence across major benchmarks. The Nasdaq 100 finished +1.3% and small caps advanced with the Russell 2000 closing +1.1%, while the Dow ended 0.0%. Market participants kept their focus on the upcoming Federal Reserve decision alongside corporate earnings reports.
Sector performance reflected that split. Information Technology was the day's strongest group, ending +1.5%. Megacap technology names drove the index, led by Broadcom Inc, which closed +4.0%, and Tesla Inc, which finished +4.0%. On the other side of the ledger, Energy ended -2.2%, though our sources show no reported driver for the group's decline. Healthcare facilities also saw pressure, with National HealthCare falling 5.2% amid sector-wide selling.
Underneath the index gains, indicators of market stress showed contrasting signals. In options trading, the VIX closed at 18.4, with a term-structure ratio of 0.92 pointing to little acute anxiety about near-term swings. Yet debt markets showed subtle hesitation: high-yield credit spreads sit at 3.30%, with a 20-day spread shift of +0.28 points. Equity options reflect a relaxed outlook, but credit markets indicate that corporate lenders are demanding slightly more compensation for risk.
