The exchange-traded fund Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) rose +0.4% to close at $186.50 on Monday, August 31, while the broader Information Technology sector gained +0.3%. EasyAlpha's numbers show that 53.6% of the fund's graded holdings carry an A or B grade, reflecting solid overall quality across the portfolio. Breadth inside the sector was narrowly positive, with 52.7% of its members advancing, and equal-weighted performance matched the cap-weighted move at +0.3%. Sector gains were driven by strength in names like Crowdstrike Holdings Inc (+5.8%) and Sandisk Corp (+5.5%), which offset weakness in Workday Inc (-3.6%). Technology achieved those gains on a session when only 2 of the 11 sectors rose, holding up even as surging oil prices and climbing Treasury yields pressured the wider market.

Military action near the Strait of Hormuz dampened broader market sentiment as the trading week began. The disruption pushed Brent crude above $90 a barrel and drove the 10-year Treasury yield up to 4.75%. While several large technology names traded lower, our sources show no reported company-specific driver for the day's advances in Crowdstrike Holdings Inc (+5.8%) or Sandisk Corp (+5.5%).

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Over the past month, XLK has risen +6.4%, extending its recent momentum despite broader market crosscurrents.

Although the sector finished ahead of the market, the narrow advance indicates that participation was selective. With equal weighting matching cap weighting at +0.3%, larger and smaller companies contributed equally to the sector's performance. However, ongoing sensitivity to interest rate movements and commodity price spikes remains an active consideration for growth-oriented sectors.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
