Market breadth was narrow on Friday, September 18, with 34% of the top 1000 companies advancing while 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Trading activity was heavy, with SPY turnover reaching 164% of a typical day's volume, yet the session left the broader market structure intact. The market sits -2.1% from its peak, marking the session as a loud day driven by quarterly repositioning rather than a meaningful change in direction.

The S&P 500 closed -0.1%, and SPY finished at $761.54. The Dow closed -0.5% as benchmark interest rates created headwinds, with the 10-year Treasury yield reaching 5.00% while oil price fluctuations added inflation concerns. In contrast, the Nasdaq 100 closed +0.6%, supported by strength across large-cap technology and semiconductor companies that weathered the interest rate moves.

Sector performance split sharply between technology and the rest of the market. Information Technology led the day, finishing +0.7%. The group drew support as chip equipment makers outran the broader sector, alongside index gains from NVIDIA Corporation (+1.3%) and Broadcom Inc (+3.0%). On the losing side, Utilities was the weakest group, finishing -1.4%. Broader cyclical groups also weakened as automaker stocks reversed Thursday's advance.

Across the broader market, only 30.4% of stocks advanced. Even with trading volumes amplified by quarterly derivatives expirations, underlying measures of market stress showed little disruption. The VIX closed at 15.4, remaining near its recent range. In fixed income, the Treasury yield curve stood at +0.27 points, and high-yield credit spreads held at 2.70%. Lenders continue to price corporate credit smoothly, indicating that broader financial plumbing remains stable despite the upward drift in government bond yields.
