A surge in semiconductor and enterprise software leaders drove major U.S. equity indexes higher on Thursday, August 27. The S&P 500 rose +0.7%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 gained +1.4%. The move followed quarterly financial results from Nvidia, which reported second-quarter revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% from the prior year, alongside a third-quarter revenue forecast of $108 billion. Reuters reported that the outlook beat market expectations and helped quell lingering concerns about the pace of artificial-intelligence spending.

Enthusiasm quickly spread across the broader software and hardware landscape. MarketScreener reported that Salesforce gained roughly 23% after raising its annual revenue and profit projections, while CrowdStrike jumped about 20% on an improved revenue forecast. Together, those reports relieved pressure on software valuations and powered a rally in Information Technology, which finished up +3.4%. The largest index-level contributions came from NVIDIA Corporation (+8.7%), Broadcom Inc (+4.5%), and Microsoft Corporation (+1.8%).

Outside the technology complex, however, the session told a far quieter story. Reuters reported that technology was the sole sector in the benchmark index to finish higher, as capital rotated out of traditional defensive and value-oriented groups. Consumer Staples led the declines, shedding -1.5%. At the same time, AP News reported that broader trading was held in check as market participants waited for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh to speak at the Jackson Hole economic symposium.

The concentration of buying produced exceptionally narrow market breadth. Only 30.3% of the 499 tracked stocks in the S&P 500 closed the session in positive territory. Indexes with less technology weighting reflected that subdued tone across the wider market: the Dow rose +0.2%, and the Russell 2000 small-cap index gained +0.3%. SPY closed the day at $771.10.
