On Monday, September 21, the market staged a broad push that left the S&P 500 sitting -0.6% from its all-time high. Trading was wider and heavier than recent norms: 56% of the top 1000 companies finished higher, 7 of the 11 sectors rose, and total turnover reached 123% of a typical day's volume. While the session was loud and driven by concentrated buying in large technology names, it reinforced an already steady market rather than altering underlying risk conditions. The S&P 500 closed +1.6%, while the Nasdaq 100 ended +2.8% and the Dow finished +0.8%.

The day's main catalyst was a sharp advance across communication and software leaders. Meta Platforms led the market after its new Muse artificial intelligence assistant reached the top ranking on the Apple App Store, prompting brokerages to raise their price targets, while peer Alphabet also traded with upward momentum. Meta Platforms Inc. closed +11.3%, setting the direction for the broader tech sector and propelling Communication Services to lead all sector groups at +3.9%.

That momentum carried directly into semiconductor producers. Traders viewed the consumer adoption of automated agents as a sign of expanding computing demand, lifting shares of chipmakers tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure. Advanced Micro Devices Inc finished +9.9% and NVIDIA Corporation closed +2.3%. Meanwhile, lower crude oil prices and easing bond yields provided a supportive backdrop for broader equities, while Energy trailed the field, closing -2.5%.

Underneath the day's headline moves, foundational market indicators point to ongoing stability. The VIX, the market's gauge of expected price swings, closed at 14.8. High-yield credit spreads settled at 2.68%, measuring the extra yield lenders demand from risky corporate borrowers, with that spread having moved -0.02 points across recent weeks.
