On Thursday, September 17, 61% of the top 1000 companies closed higher as 10 of the 11 sectors rose, while trading volume reached 126% of a typical day's volume. The broad advance left the market -1.9% from its peak, marking an active session that pushed major indexes higher without fundamentally shifting underlying macroeconomic conditions. Stocks rebounded across sectors as Treasury yields and crude oil prices dropped, following the previous session's Federal Reserve interest rate decision.

Encouraging macroeconomic data helped investors look past tighter monetary policy. Fresh labor numbers showed that weekly jobless claims fell to 196,000, the lowest level since mid-July, confirming that employment conditions remain resilient. The broad-based rally generated the market's strongest single-session performance in six weeks, wiping out earlier losses across the week. The S&P 500 finished +1.1%, with SPY closing at $762.70. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 closed +1.7%, the Dow ended +0.6%, and the small-cap Russell 2000 settled +0.5%.

Sector leadership was concentrated in growth and cyclical areas. Information Technology finished +2.1%, pacing the market across the session. Defensive groups saw less interest, with Consumer Staples finishing at -0.1%. Breadth across tracked index components was positive, with 58.6% of companies advancing on the day. The largest contributions to index gains came from mega-cap technology leaders: NVIDIA Corporation (+2.5%), Apple Inc. (+1.4%), and Micron Technology Inc (+5.5%). Within the tech group, individual components also saw active trading as analysts updated price targets for semiconductor companies.

Under the surface, credit conditions remained orderly, with high-yield credit spreads holding at 2.70%. Meanwhile, equity market volatility stayed contained as the VIX closed at 17.7.
