A sharp pullback in artificial intelligence hardware made for a noisy session on Monday, September 14, but the broader market held its ground. Trading volume reached 118% of a typical day's volume as 3 of the 11 sectors rose, yet 51% of the top 1000 companies closed higher. The market sits -2.2% from its all-time high, and 56.4% of the 495 stocks we track in the index finished in positive territory. It was a loud day of rotation that left broader conditions intact.

Headline indexes ended lower, driven down by heavy selling across semiconductor and server makers. The S&P 500 closed -0.5%, with SPY finishing at $760.81, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 closed -0.8%. The tech slide began after warnings of an AI slowdown pressured chipmakers, prompting investors to trim exposure across the sector. The selling spread further into infrastructure names after a downgrade of Hewlett Packard Enterprise following its recent run.

Mega-cap chipmakers took the brunt of the pressure. Losses in NVIDIA Corporation (-3.4%) and Broadcom Inc (-4.8%) weighed heavily on the indexes, dragging Information Technology to -1.7% on the day. Rather than leaving the market, however, capital shifted across industries. Software shares gained as investors rotated away from hardware, while a rally in Alphabet Inc Class C (+3.1%) helped lift Communication Services to +2.7%.

Underlying risk gauges confirmed that the day's turbulence remained confined to tech. The VIX closed at 15.8, well below levels that indicate widespread distress and consistent with normal market fluctuations. In corporate debt, high-yield credit spreads stood at 2.65%, showing that lenders see little emerging pressure on borrowers. The session reflected a localized repricing of hardware leaders rather than a broad market pullback.
