Thursday was a loud session that looked far more damaging on the surface than it was underneath. Even as trading volume reached 132% of a typical day's volume, 58% of the top 1000 companies closed higher, 5 of the 11 sectors rose, and the S&P 500 finished -1.9% from its record peak. It was a sharp drop confined to a handful of influential technology companies, leaving the broader market largely intact.

The major indexes diverged along that fault line. The S&P 500 finished -1.2%, with SPY closing at $764.06, while the tech-dominated Nasdaq 100 registered -2.9%. In contrast, the Dow stood at 0.0%. The pressure began in technology as investors questioned whether massive artificial intelligence capital outlays will produce sufficient near-term profits. Earnings reports from companies including Meta and Tesla revived concerns that massive artificial intelligence spending may fail to generate adequate returns. A simultaneous rise in crude oil linked to the war involving Iran added to the headwinds by renewing concerns about stubborn inflation.

The tech pressure landed directly on index heavyweights: NVIDIA Corporation closed -4.4%, pulling Information Technology to -4.0% on the day. Yet the retreat remained concentrated in technology. Across the broader market, 66.2% of S&P 500 stocks advanced, while Consumer Staples led advancing groups at +3.1%.

Underneath the tech slide, broader risk measures showed little sign of distress. Despite the sharp pullback in large tech names, expected market volatility stayed restrained, with the VIX settling at 16.7. In credit markets, high-yield spreads stood at 3.27% after moving +0.54 points over recent weeks, reflecting growing caution. In interest rate markets, the Treasury yield curve remained upward sloping, with the spread between longer and shorter maturities at +0.32 points.
